How to address your computer on the internet with a static named URL
One of the biggest obstacles to using the peer to peer capabilities of the internet is the fact that when you access the internet thru an Internet Service Provider you usually use a DHCP server. The DHCP server assigns you a temporary internet IP address to use each time you connect to the internet. This IP address is needed by any other user on the internet who wants to access a server program that you may be running on your computer.

One way you could make your temporary IP address known is to send e-mails to all your friends and associates telling them your IP address so they could connect to you. Unfortunately that address is only good while you are connected to the internet and it will probably get given out to another person that connects to your ISP and they will be using it for a while. If your ISP provides static IP addressing for its customers that would be an excellent way for your friends and associates to refer to your computer. Dynamic DNS Services on the Internet like ISEEQ are another good way to keep track of the current IP address for computers with dynamic IP addresses.

What is DNS ? DNS stands for domain naming service and it is what allows computers on the internet to have names like mywebserver.org instead of IP addresses like 12.32.126.211. Actually every computer on the Internet has an IP address and what the Domain Naming System does is associate names with each of the IP addresses. Servers on the internet have pretty steady IP addresses and they're always on the network so associating a name with a server is fairly static and can not be changed more than once a day. When you type a server name into your web browser it immediately contacts your DNS server and looks up the named address you typed in the URL and if its found an IP address is returned to the web browser because internally all communication on the internet is done by IP address and in order for your web browser to connect to a web server it needs its IP address.

Most Internet Service Providers give you a small web site on their server you can fill with your own pages and files. And you access it using their published domain name. So your website URL might look like http://www.yourISP.net/yourEMailAddress MyWebServer's Virtual DNS service can make this named URL point to your computer so you, or your associates can access your computer at any time using a name like the one above instead of needing to know the current IP address of your computer in order to access it with a url like http://12.32.126.211. If your Internet Service Provider does not supply you a static IP address or a free static web site with your account. Or if the free web site that was provided by your ISP does not accept ftp file uploads to your static web site you may need to use a Dynamic Naming Service Like ICQ or dyndns to give you a static named Internet Address.
