Internet Addressing FAQ
Q: How do I address my computer on the internet? A: All you need in order to connect to MyWebServer is the IP address of the computer it is running on. My web server will tell you what the IP address is in it's control panel. You can also fnd out the IP address by moving the cursor over the MyWebServer Icon in the Tray area of your task bar (near the clock). To form a URL or Uniform Resource Locator for an ip address you just put http:// in front of it. So if your ip address were 11.12.13.14 the URL would be http://11.12.13.14. Addressing your web site this way is very dynamic because in most cases your IP address is different each time you connect to the internet. Dynamic addressing makes it more difficult to collaborate or share files on the internet because you need to tell your collaborators your new address each time you connect to the net or use a static named internet address for your computer. To learn more about how MyWebServer's static addressing works read the articles at the Addressing section and take a look at the Addressing FAQ section. Q: What is an IP (IP address) ? A: An IP(Internet Protocol) Address allows you to be singled out from the other numerous Internet users. Anytime you connect to the internet, you have an IP address. Often times they are shared however (see the section on proxys). An IP address is made up of 4 numbers between 0 and 255 separated by 3 periods and looks something like this 208.61.116.18 Q: Why does my IP keep changing? What is DHCP ? A: When your IP changes, it is said to be dynamic. Broadband internet access often uses dynamic addresses through DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). You can usually determine a pattern for your host. It is not uncommon for your IP to change once a day, or once every few days. For instance, today your IP address might be 24.32.2.62, tomorrow you may have the ip 24.32.2.19. If you are applying for FTP access where the site op has requested that you include your IP, you would send 24.32.2.* A dynamic address should not complicate your etree.org participation. If you want to run a server and have a dynamic address, consider using a dynamic pointer from dyndns.org or eyep.net Q: How does MyWebServers built in Virtual Domain Naming Service work? Q: Can I use MyWebServers built in Virtual Dynamic Addressing if AOL is my ISP? A: MyWebServers built in Virtual Domain Naming Service uses FTP (file transfer protocol) to upload the redirector page and the Off-Line Notification pages which is how it is done on most web sites. AOL Allows you to transfer files to your account by FTP but they don't allow you to publish a web page that way. If you want to use MyWebServers built in Virtual Domain Naming Service with AOL as your ISP you can use MyWebServer to create the redirector page and the Off-Line Notification page and to upload them to AOL but you will need to change the location of the uploaded file to your web site manually on the AOL service each time you start MyWebServer. Q: Can I configure MyWebServer to work with more than one Ethernet Adapter? A: By default MyWebServer is Multi-Homed. That means MyWebServer will respond to URLS that refer to any of your Network Adapters. You can also configure MyWebServer to be Single-Homed and to be bound to just one of your Network Adapters. Read the article on Multi-Homing for instructions on using the Single-Homed Launcher and MyWebServer's -bind and -absolute command line arguments. Q: What is a Dynamic Addressing Service? A: Dynamic Addressing Services are services available on the internet like ISEEQ or dyndns.org that maintain static named internet addresses for users whose ISP's only provide dynamic numbered IP addressing (that's just about everyone). Some companies charge a monthly or yearly fee for this service and others provide the service for free. For more information on Dynamic Addressing Services read this Great article on Using ICQ or dyndns ect. to give your computer a static named URL by David E. Smith of technopagan.com Q: How Do I find a Dynamic Addressing Service? A: Heres a list of Dynamic Addressing Services for your examination.
